Packaging Inspector

Automatic inspection of packaging on a conveyor belt

The IVISYS Packaging Inspector quickly finds the products that do not comply with the specification, saving cost further down the production line, in transit or at the customer. The system efficiently inspects, records and sorts 100% of the production. The system can easily inspect variable product series, and switching from one series to another is a matter of pressing a key.

The high-resolution camera picks out every detail for analysis to determine if the product is defect.

3 Reasons Why

  • Saves more than 90% of the cost related to defects
  • Handles variable product series easily
  • Collects valuable inspection trend and data

Case examples

Here the IVISYS Packaging Inspector checks that bottles are properly closed so their content will not spill. We find all bottles from partly closed to entirely missing the closure. In this set-up, the camera moves up and down automatically, as different series of bottles sizes are produced.

This inspection is indifferent to the type of closure used, weather it is pump, mist or regular closure. Furthermore, the dimensional variations in plastic bottles and closures are resolved with a very simple adjustment.

How it works

The IVISYS Packaging Inspector is placed on/next to a conveyor in order to inspect the products/objects passing by. The system operates automatically as objects pass a sensor.

High-resolution cameras capture the images of the object and send them to a computer for analysis. This analysis takes place in just a fraction of a second and examines the external shape, the count, the level, the existence or the position of a detail/feature. It can also do text barcode verification. The computer can handle multiple cameras if the inspection is based on multiple views. The cameras’ positions and the light has been carefully selected to offer the best possible image.

Based on the analysis an alarm or external function is activated. The result of each inspection is recorded and stored for later reports or statistics.

What and how we analyze is all stored in the system and available at an instant when needed. This is an advantage when more than just one product series needs to be inspected. Even the camera position used with our optional camera galley, is stored and instantly recalled when switching to another series.

The system can of course be adapted to inspect other types of products, as long as the features are clearly visible to the camera and the products passes by like on a conveyor.

Why should you automate your quality control?

First – quality control is not only a means to supply products that meet customer requirements. Quality inspection if conducted automatically further reduces waste and increases profit.
Manual inspection of products that passes by on a conveyor belt is tiresome, and normal practice is to rotate the staff at regular intervals to keep their senses sharp. Furthermore, manual inspection only reduces the fault rate by a factor of 3-6.

Automatic inspection, on the other hand is a tireless, objective, consistent and a fast method to achieve instant better results. It also offers the possibility of collecting valuable statistical data and documenting the quality improvement process.
